Willow Installation

Individual circular willow vines hang together off brackets along a wall under a skylight. The installation is a standalone.  When lit from above shafts of dramatic shadows form along the wall below, creating a cascade of shapes which appear and disappear, depending on the light.

There is a 90-year-old willow tree in our backyard. When the willow sheds branches in abundance, it is harvest time. While picking them up, I began to create—stacking one way, then another, twisting, turning, overlapping, then weaving singular branches each reminiscent of a lasso, my Montana born cowboy father’s influence. A daily meditation. Each circled branch of varying sizes is placed on a 4-inch L-shaped shelf, hanging from the wall, eventually accompanied by 30 others.
